What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a personalised and integrative approach to healthcare, which can trace the root causes of complex health problems, help clients to understand what is going on and how to improve their health and relieve chronic disease holistically.

Functional medicine compliments conventional medicine and provides a new dimension in the evaluation, management and prevention of chronic disease.

Why Is Functional Medicine Needed?

There has been a dramatic rise globally in chronic health problems such as autoimmune conditions, neuro developmental issues, blood sugar problems, anxiety and depression.

Functional Medicine is a holistic model of healthcare that asks how and why illness occurs and aims to restore health by addressing the root cause of disease for each individual.

Why Choose Roe Health?

Roe Health is a Functional Medicine centre of excellence providing solutions for complex health conditions that are chronic, complex and affecting multiple systems of the body at the same time.

If you have been unwell for sometime and unable to get a diagnosis, we can help you get to the root cause of your issues using approaches informed by the latest research and show you how to improve your health holistically.

How it works

Paperwork

We will email you our intake paperwork and request any recent blood or scan results. These must be completed and returned before an initial consultation date can be set.

Initial Consultation

The initial 2-3hr consultation must be in person either in Skibbereen, Co Cork or by appointment in Dublin. This consultation will include a physical and neurological assessment plus a case review. Further testing will be discussed at this stage and an initial treatment plan put in place. A thorough case history, neurological exam and physical exam are essential with complex health cases as many brain, neurological and gastrointestinal complaints are not apparent with blood tests alone.

Appointments

Follow-up appointments are usually scheduled monthly. These can be in person or online as we work together through your case.

“Helping you to get well and stay well"

Are you suffering with an autoimmune condition?

There are more than 80 different autoimmune conditions, which vary greatly from each other. Some of the better known are MS (multiple sclerosis) which causes nerve damage. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis which damages the thyroid gland, Rheumatoid Arthritis which affects the joints and autoimmune gastritis which affects the digestive system. The feature that is similar to them all is that the bodies immune system is inappropriately damaging its own tissue. A personalised diet, nutrition and lifestyle approach can change the expression of autoimmune conditions for many people.

Have you tried everything?

Chronic health issues normally take a long time to develop and therefore a long time until a diagnosis is available.  Symptoms like brain fatigue, general fatigue, difficultly managing weight, chronic pain, chronic IBS, anxiety, depression or unusual unexplained symptoms which have been ignored or classed as normal can all be helped with a functional medicine approach.

Have you been diagnosed with Low Thyroid function?

The leading cause of hypothyroidism (low thyroid function) is an autoimmune condition called Hashimotos thyroiditis. People with this condition are placed on hormone replacement therapy, which is necessary, however because the root cause is often overlooked they may still have symptoms related to low thyroid function like weight gain, tiredness, constipation, aches and pains, sensitivity to cold and depression. A functional medicine approach looking at all the factors that have caused your immune system to over react can be a game changer and help you improve your health.

Have you been diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity but cutting out gluten doesn’t seem to help you?

This is more common than you think.  There are many reasons  including intestinal permeability, cross reactive foods and further undiagnosed gastrointestinal complaints. By taking a deeper dive into your personal circumstances we can help you get to the root cause and create a personalised treatment programme that will help.

Are your blood tests normal but you still feel unwell?

It is actually very common to feel unwell even when blood results are normal.  Many conditions do not cause changes in blood chemistry, for these cases a full neurological and physical in person assessment will help to uncover what is going on for you.

  • What do functional medicine doctors do?

Functional Medicine Doctors provide a model of healthcare that asks how and why illness occurs and aims to restore health by addressing the root cause of disease for each individual.  Functional Medicine Doctors come from a wide variety of health disciplines and therefore practice differently and specialise in different areas of health.

Dr Eoin Roe is a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, this is a unique skill set in Ireland as he can offer you physical and neurological examinations as well as diagnostic services. This means he helps with a wide range of conditions including autoimmunity, neuro inflammation that is causing depression/anxiety, blood sugar instability as well as chronic gastrointestinal complaints, chronic pain and energy issues.

  • How long do you work with patients for?

By their nature chronic health conditions are unique to each client and can take time to turnaround so we may work together for many months, a year or even longer depending on individual circumstances.

  • Can Functional Medicine be done online?

Follow up sessions are available online however the initial consultation is in person as it includes a full neurological and physical assessment.  Your intial consultation is available either at our clinic in Skibbereen, Co. Cork or by arrangement in Dublin.

  • Do I need blood tests?

Yes a blood test is required for all new Functional Medicine patients. If you already have recent results from your GP or any other source, we are happy to use these as a starting point.

Testing is an important part of understanding what is happening for you and also gives us a good way to monitor any progress whilst you are working with us.

Specialist testing can give us a better understanding of any problems that you are having and help us to be much more specific with our advice.

  • Where can I get the blood tests done?

We are able to order special testing as required and have a phlebotomy service in our clinic in Skibbereen.  If you live a long way from the clinic we are able to have tests sent to you which you can take to a local phlebotomist and return them direct to the lab.

  • How much does Functional Medicine cost?

The level of support, testing and interventions will vary as each person is unique and their case treated individually.

    You will need to consider:

    1. Consultation fees

    2. Testing fees

    3. Cost of any recommendations i.e supplements or scans if needed.

    See Our Fees HERE

  • Do Functional Medicine Practitioners give medication?

Some do, this depends on their qualifications.

I am a Doctor of Chiropractic and CFMP (Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner) I do not prescribe medication.  Sometimes medication is essential and if I feel this is the case I will refer you back to your GP and work with them to make sure you get the attention you need.
