The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is one of the key systems that keep us alive and healthy.

It is responsible for the breakdown, digestion and absorption of food, nutrients and water that we need to survive.  It has to do all of this whilst keeping out unwanted pathogens.

The GI tract provides a key barrier function for our body protecting us from the outside world.

Many people have a diagnosis of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or SIBO (Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), but other than describing the condition these diagnosis do little to help understand the cause.

Additionally many who are suffering from more serious gastrointestinal issues such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis are unaware these are autoimmune issues.

Dealing with gastrointestinal issues can be challenging there are many complex relationships between the microbiome and the immune system, liver function, the nervous system, brain function, hormone balance and digestive function.

Finding out what is wrong requires a methodical approach.  The good news is there are many diet and lifestyle supports that can really help remove symptoms and manage the problem.

At Roe Health we take a top down approach to working through a case that involves gastrointestinal issues and that means we are going to consider the following:

  • Diet & Nutrition
  • Chewing & Saliva
  • Hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid)
  • Liver function
  • Pancreatic enzyme function
  • Motility
  • Food Sensitivities
  • Presence of pathogens
  • Intestinal permeability
  • Autoimmunity
