Functional Neurology
Functional Neurology is a gentle, non-invasive approach that supports how the brain processes movement and sensory information. By stimulating specific neural pathways, it helps the nervous system function more efficiently and respond more clearly to the world around it.
What can Functional Neurology help with?
Functional Neurology may be beneficial for a wide range of neurological and sensory based symptoms, including:
- Dizziness and sensations of unsteadiness
- Balance and coordination problems
- Headaches and migraine patterns
- Driving difficulties related to visual or spatial awareness
- Dysautonomia and nervous system regulation issues
- Post concussion recovery
- Post stroke recovery
Because each nervous system is unique, care is always tailored to the individual. The goal is not to mask symptoms, but to help the brain function more effectively so the body can regain stability, confidence, and resilience.
The brain is the most complex and vital organ in the human body. It plays a central role in everything we do as humans – from how we move and maintain balance, to how we think, feel, perceive the world, and respond to our environment. Rather than being fixed or unchangeable, the brain remains adaptable throughout life. This adaptability allows it to respond to specific cognitive, sensory, and physical inputs that can have powerful therapeutic effects.
At Roe Health, Functional Neurology care is personalised to the individual. Treatment plans are developed through detailed assessment and tailored to your symptoms, history, and goals.
How does Functional Neurology work?
Your nervous system is constantly balancing “on” and “off” signals.
These signals regulate movement, posture, balance, vision, coordination, digestion, heart rate, and many other automatic processes. When this balance becomes disrupted, the brain may struggle to accurately process information coming from the eyes, inner ear (vestibular system), muscles, and joints.
When this happens, the brain can misinterpret sensory input, leading to symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, poor balance, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating. Importantly, these symptoms are not necessarily caused by permanent damage. Instead, they are often the result of underactive or poorly integrated brain pathways.
Functional Neurology uses targeted, individualised exercises to stimulate specific areas of the brain. These may include eye movements, balance challenges, sensory stimulation, coordination tasks, or cognitive activities. Each exercise is designed to activate precise neural circuits and encourage more efficient communication within the nervous system.
Neuroplasticity – the foundation of Functional Neurology
The brain is not fixed. At any age, it has the ability to change, adapt, and reorganise itself. This ability is known as neuroplasticity. Through repetition and the correct type of stimulation, the brain can strengthen existing connections and form new ones.
When the right pathways are activated consistently, they become faster, stronger, and more stable. This is how the brain learns new skills, adapts to challenges, and recovers from injury or dysfunction. Functional Neurology is built on these principles, using structured input to guide the brain towards healthier, more balanced patterns of activity.
Over time, this improved efficiency can support better balance, coordination, focus, and overall quality of life.

The Personal Touch at Roe Health
Dr. Eoin Roe is an experienced chiropractor and Functional Neurology practitioner at Roe Health, with a strong focus on how the brain and nervous system influence movement, balance, and overall health. He understands that neurological symptoms can be complex, frustrating, and often difficult to explain, which is why he prioritises careful listening and thorough assessment.
Every treatment is tailored – there is no one - size - fits - all approach. Eoin works with you to identify how your nervous system is functioning and uses targeted, evidence - informed strategies to support long - term neurological resilience, coordination, and quality of life.
Is Functional Neurology Covered by Insurance?
Functional Neurology may be covered by certain health insurance plans, depending on your provider and policy. We recommend checking directly with your insurer to confirm your level of cover before starting treatment.
FAQs
Do I need an MRI?
The short answer is no - But if you have had a brain MRI please bring the results of this study with you to your appointment. As Chiropractic function neurologist we are dealing with problems that are functional as opposed to medical and often do not show up on scans. We are also able to help people who have had medical trauma and results from medical investigations can help to give you better care and help you understand what may be possible.
If we do feel that the findings in your neurological assessment would warrant an MRI we will write to your GP and ask for this to be done.
How can you help if my MRI results are normal?
Yes we can. We treat many conditions that do not have MRI findings - headaches, dizziness, visual disturbance, balance problems often will have no MRI finding. We use in person neurological testing to assess function and base our diagnosis and care.
Is Functional Neurology treatment safe?
Yes. Functional Neurology treatments are non - invasive and designed to work within the body’s natural neurological processes. Each programme is personalised following a detailed assessment to ensure exercises and therapies are appropriate for the individual.
What conditions can Functional Neurology help with?
Functional Neurology is commonly used to support people with vertigo, balance disorders, migraines, post - concussion syndrome, movement difficulties, chronic stress, sensory processing issues, and certain neurological dysfunctions. Treatment focuses on improving function rather than diagnosing disease.
What happens during a Functional Neurology assessment?
An assessment typically includes a detailed medical history, neurological testing, balance and coordination checks, eye movement analysis, and sensory response evaluations. This allows the clinician to identify areas of neurological imbalance and design a tailored treatment plan.
How long does Functional Neurology treatment take?
Treatment length varies depending on the condition and individual response. Some patients notice improvements within a few sessions, while others benefit from a structured programme over several weeks. Progress is regularly reviewed and adjusted as needed.
Is Functional Neurology suitable for children and adults?
Yes. Functional Neurology can be suitable for both adults and children, depending on the condition being treated. All programmes are adapted to the individual’s age, ability, and neurological needs.
Does Functional Neurology involve medication?
No. Functional Neurology focuses on neurological rehabilitation through movement, sensory stimulation, and functional exercises. It does not involve medication or surgery.
